At Fairlington Preschool, we know that play is essential, serious learning! Play is where children engage, explore, make choices, solve problems, and build skills. Through our implementation of the HighScope curriculum, children construct knowledge by acting on their curiosity and reflecting on their experiences, using their own interests to drive their development. They are guided by supportive adults and feel safe taking risks in their learning within the structure of their classroom’s daily routine.
Just as essential as play in early childhood development is providing children with ample opportunities to engage with their natural environment. We make it a priority to spend time outdoors as much as possible. We are so fortunate to have one of the largest preschool playgrounds in the City of Alexandria, complete with wooded trails, learning logs, a playscape, hill slides, a sand area, riding toys, and much more!
Fairlington also offers a number of enrichment activities each week for all of our classrooms: a student lending library, music and movement with a certified music therapist, and FAIR Play, a games-based active movement program designed and implemented by our staff recreational therapist.
Incorporated into our daily routine are opportunities for dance, yoga, finger-plays, and other fine & gross motor movement activities, as well as for sign language, storytime, and Handwriting Without Tears activities, which support our students’ early writing, communication, and literacy skills.
Our staff is trained to meet every child where they are on their individual journey of growth and development, and so we are able to serve a diverse community of learners in our program with the expertise, resources, and understanding that each child deserves. As a part of our incredible Inclusion program, each of our classrooms includes children with developmental delays or disabilities in addition to our typically developing children. On a daily basis, we see the many benefits that inclusion offers to all of our students.
